Transformation is possible.

What we believe about people

If you google "wellness diagram" you will most likely see a venn diagram similar to the one pictured. This type of diagram is designed to help us understand that our lives are integrated. When we neglect one area of our lives, other parts are affected as well. Thus, paying attention to each element is  an important part of living a healthy life.

At Trellis Collaborative, while we agree with the idea that all of life is integrated, we differ with the traditional "wellness" wisdom on one point. We believe that people are made in the image of God. And God, is Spirit. Thus, as people made in his image, we are first and foremost spiritual beings. We are spirits with bodies who need exercise and healthy eating habits. We are spirits who experience a range of emotions like joy, sadness, hopefulness or uncertainty. We are spirits with minds that have helpful and not so helpful thoughts. We are spirits who have relational networks with family, friends, neighbors and co-workers.

Thus, everything we do, how we eat, the emotions we experience, the thoughts we think, and the friends we keep, affect us. They affect our spirits. The approach we take here at Trellis is that we are all integrated spiritual beings, that God cares about every part of our lives, and that Jesus came to heal and make us whole. And He invites us to bring wholeness and healing to others as we walk with Him.

What's with the name?

Jesus lived in an agricultural society. Many of His parables and sayings only make sense if you understand the context in which He lived.

In John 15 Jesus said, "I am the vine, you are the branches." His audience, 1st century peasants––immediately, and without effort––would have had an image in their mind's eye. And almost certainly, it was an image of a vineyard. What His listeners would have assumed, we completely miss. The branches of a vine are always supported by something...a wall, a post, a tree, but most commonly, it would have been supported by an intentionally made support system known as a trellis.

Jesus' invitation was not merely to believe correct doctrines about God (even demons do that––James 2:19). It was to do life with Him and put into place practices and rhythms that support His way of life. Trellis is for those who want to live an abundant life and explore Jesus' invitation to do life with Him.
